Where is Kheda?

Kheda is a village of Tarn Taran tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Patti, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Naushera Pannuan community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038010, and it covers 133 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 620 people in Kheda: 332 men and 288 women, living in 105 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 133 hectares, the population density works out to about 466 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 867 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 69, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 262 people, about 42 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 62.07 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 69.9 per cent and women at 52.78 per cent. The census recorded 148 workers, about 24 per cent of the village. Of the 125 main workers, the largest group, 66, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 30 other workers in trade, transport and services and 26 agricultural labourers. A further 23 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (115 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 16 hours a day. With 67 cultivators and 33 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
