Where is Khehra?

Khehra is a village of Tarn Taran tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Tarn Taran, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tarn Taran community development block and is served by the Khera gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038018, and it covers 199 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 877 people in Khehra: 458 men and 419 women, living in 148 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 199 hectares, the population density works out to about 441 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 915 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 100, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 254 people, about 29 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 54.44 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 61.73 per cent and women at 46.51 per cent. The census recorded 292 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 269 main workers, the largest group, 117, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 109 agricultural labourers and 35 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 23 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Khehra's land. Of the village's 199 hectares, 185 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (171 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (14 hectares). About 14 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
