Where is Thatha?

Thatha is a village of Tarn Taran tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Gandiwind community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037867, and it covers 425 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,866 people in Thatha: 1,013 men and 853 women, living in 307 households, an average of about 6.1 people per household. Spread over its 425 hectares, the population density works out to about 439 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 842 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 257, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,258 people, about 67 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 62.03 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 68.62 per cent and women at 54.26 per cent. The census recorded 722 workers, about 39 per cent of the village. Of the 405 main workers, the largest group, 130, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 114 agricultural labourers and 102 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 317 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Thatha's land. Of the village's 425 hectares, 377 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (320 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (57 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 131 cultivators and 258 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
