Where is Thathian Mahantan?

Thathian Mahantan is a village in Tarn Taran tehsil of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Tarn Taran, about 19 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Naushera Pannuan community development block and is served by the Thatian Mahantan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037980, and it covers 520 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,090 people in Thathian Mahantan: 1,604 men and 1,486 women, living in 570 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 520 hectares, the population density works out to about 594 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 926 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 356, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,323 people, about 43 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 62.98 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 68.22 per cent and women at 57.36 per cent. The census recorded 895 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 776 main workers, the largest group, 346, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 289 cultivators on their own land and 124 agricultural labourers. A further 119 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Tarn Taran, the tehsil headquarters, and Tarn Taran town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Waryah, Mohanpura and Durgapur Garbi.
