Where is Uppal?

Uppal is a village in Khadur Sahib tehsil of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Rayya, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Khadur Sahib community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038325, and it covers 308 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,828 people in Uppal: 976 men and 852 women, living in 318 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 308 hectares, the population density works out to about 594 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 873 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 241, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 952 people, about 52 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 58.73 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 64.57 per cent and women at 52.09 per cent. The census recorded 601 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 587 main workers, the largest group, 319, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 207 cultivators on their own land and 53 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 14 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Uppal's land. Of the village's 308 hectares, 250 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (250 hectares). About 58 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 214 cultivators and 319 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
