Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar is the Sikh temple at 7801 Rue Cordner in the LaSalle borough of Montreal, Quebec, the landmark gurdwara of Montreal's Sikh community. Built in 2001, it is a bright white domed temple whose Nishan Sahib, at 172 feet, is among the tallest in the world in the temple's own words. Daily services are held from 4 a.m., and its annual Nagar Kirtan procession draws thousands through the streets of LaSalle. It is one of the entries in our guide to Gurdwaras in Canada.

What is Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar?

Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar is a gurdwara, a Sikh place of worship: the word means the doorway to the Guru, and the prayer hall centres on the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture honoured as the eternal Guru, while the langar kitchen serves a free vegetarian meal to everyone who comes. The LaSalle temple is the flagship of three gurdwaras the community runs in the Montreal area, alongside Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar Park Extension in Montreal and one in Hudson, Quebec. For Montreal's Punjabi families, and for the students and visitors who come to learn about the faith, it is the Sikh temple of the city.

From Lachine to LaSalle: how the temple moved

The community's earlier temple stood at 1090 St Joseph in Lachine. In 1995 it bought land in LaSalle for a new temple, and from 1996 the congregation began gathering on that land for its annual Khalsa parade. That parade itself was older: it had been held downtown in Victoria Square since at least 1993, before the shopkeepers' complaints about lost business pushed it out and the LaSalle land offered a new home in a residential area that, as one long time member put it, really likes it. The present temple opened on 24 December 2000, as recorded in a Montreal Religious Sites Project field report from the spring of 2002; the gurdwara's own site dates the building to 2001.

The building and its 172 foot Nishan Sahib

The temple's own description leads with its numbers: built in 2001, with a Nishan Sahib standing 172 feet high, one of only twelve in the world at that height, on one of the most historic sites in Montreal. The 2002 field report describes the impression on a first visit: a bright white, imposing facility, with a main prayer hall eighty feet by one hundred feet that fits more than a thousand people, the altar raised at the far end with the Guru Granth Sahib under a canopy, and a very tall flagpole flying the Sikh flag beside it. The langar hall sits downstairs, built to hold three or four hundred people, and the kitchen was the congregation's point of pride: stainless steel walls, brand new stoves and ovens, and a modern fire control system, with a stockroom kept full by donations from the congregation.

Daily worship and the children's school

The temple's published schedule starts each day at 4 a.m. with the Parkash of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, then Nitnem, Simran and Asa Ji Di Var, morning katha and the Ardas and Hukamnama, with Sri Sukhmani Sahib, Rehras Sahib and evening kirtan closing the day at 7:30 p.m. The LaSalle gurdwara also teaches its young: Punjabi language and kirtan classes run through the week, the 2002 report recording weekend classes for children aged five to twenty one taught mostly by women who had come from India, alongside religious classes in kirtan singing and Gurbani reading. The temple says about 15,000 Canadians, including university, college, high school and elementary students and professors from faculties across Quebec, have visited it in recent years.

The Khalsa parade through LaSalle

Every year the temple takes the Khalsa parade through LaSalle's streets to honour the first five baptised into the Khalsa in 1699. A 2011 report described the shape of the day: three flat bed floats, a marching band, and groups of people in orange turbans and white shirts leaving 7801 Cordner at 1:30 p.m., looping through the residential streets and arriving back at the temple about 3:45 p.m., with Punjabi food served throughout from the basement kitchen and five tents in the parking lot. The organisers expected between 7,000 and 10,000 people, depending on the weather, with visitors coming from Ottawa and Toronto. The parade continues: the temple's 2025 notice set the Nagar Kirtan for Sunday, 18 May 2025.
