The eye 'catching' — to doze off lightly, the gentle Punjabi phrase for drifting into sleep.
Literal meaning
Akkh is the eye, laggna is to attach or catch. The literal image is of sleep catching the eye — the eyelids growing heavy, the gaze sticking, until the eyes close on their own.
It is not the deep plunge of night sleep but the soft snag of a doze: on a bus, in a warm afternoon, during a dull lecture.
What it really means
The saying means to fall into a light sleep or doze. 'Safar vich akkh lag gayi' means I dozed off on the journey. It is gentle and blameless — nobody is scolded for their eye catching.
It is distinct from the 'evil eye' (nazar laggna), though the verbs are cousins. Here the eye is the sleeper's own, and what catches it is rest.
Cultural context
The afternoon doze is a beloved institution in Punjab's hot summers, and this phrase is its name. After the midday meal, eyes catch across the villages.
It appears in lullabies, where mothers sing the child's eyes into catching, and in the complaints of night-shift workers and long-distance drivers, for whom the catching eye is a danger to fight.
