ਅਨੰਦ ਕਾਰਜ (anand karaj) is the Sikh wedding ceremony, a simple rite held before the Guru Granth Sahib Ji whose name means “ceremony of bliss”. At its heart are the four lavan, wedding hymns sung while the couple walks around the scripture four times, marking the start of a married life built on faith, equality and shared devotion.

What does Anand Karaj mean?

The name breaks into two Punjabi words. Anand means bliss or spiritual joy, and karaj means a sacred act or ceremony, so the phrase is often translated as “blissful union” or “ceremony of bliss”. The name tells you what Sikhism asks of marriage: not just a legal contract or a grand party, but a joyful partnership with devotion to Waheguru and the teachings of the Guru at its center.

Who formalized the Anand Karaj?

The ceremony traces back to Guru Amar Das Ji, the third Sikh Guru, who in the 16th century set out how Sikhs should marry in the Guru’s presence rather than through the older rituals around a sacred fire. The four lavan, the hymns at the ceremony’s center, were composed by his successor, Guru Ram Das Ji. The rite received legal recognition in India under the Anand Marriage Act of 1909, and later amendments let Sikh couples register their marriages under that act.

What happens during an Anand Karaj?

The ceremony takes place in a gurdwara before the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. It opens with an ardas, a prayer asking for blessings for the couple. Then comes the palla rasam, in which the bride’s father places one end of a scarf in the groom’s hand. The heart of the ceremony is the four lavan: the couple walks around the Guru Granth Sahib Ji four times while the hymns are sung, each round marking a stage of their spiritual journey together. A portion of Anand Sahib is then sung, and the ceremony closes with a final ardas and the hukamnama, a verse from the scripture chosen at random to offer guidance.

What are the rules of an Anand Karaj?

The Sikh Rehat Maryada, the Sikh code of conduct, keeps the ceremony simple and focused. It must take place in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, only Gurbani hymns are recited, and there are no sacred fire rituals. Both partners must consent freely to the marriage, and everyone present covers their head and keeps respectful conduct inside the gurdwara. A directive from the Akal Takht says the ceremony should be held in a gurdwara, not at destination or resort venues.
