Meaning

ਵਿਆਹ (vyah) means “marriage” or “wedding” in Punjabi — the union of two people as husband and wife, and by extension the whole celebration that surrounds it. From the engagement (kurmai) to the mehndi and jaggo nights, the wedding day itself and the bride’s farewell (doli), a Punjabi vyah is a multi-day festival. The word comes from Sanskrit vivāha.

A Punjabi wedding

In Punjab a wedding is rarely a one-day affair. The celebrations usually begin days before, with the kurmai or mangni (engagement), the mehndi evening where the bride’s hands are decorated with henna, and the jaggo procession the night before, when the mother’s family dances through the village with a decorated pot on a stick, singing wedding songs.

On the wedding day the groom’s party, the baraat, travels to the bride’s home with dhol players leading the dancing. Sikh weddings are solemnised through the Anand Karaj, in which the couple circles the Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the four lavan, the wedding hymns, are sung. The day closes with the doli — the bride’s emotional farewell as she leaves her parents’ home.

In everyday speech

Vyah is also a verb-friendly word: “vyah karna” means to get married, “vyah ho gaya” means the wedding happened, and people speak of “vyah wale ghar” — the house where a wedding is on. The word appears in folk songs, blessings and everyday talk far more often than the formal alternative shaadi, which came into Punjabi from Persian through Urdu and Hindi.
