ਘਰ

Meaning

Ghar means home or house. It is the building where a family lives — but in Punjabi, as in English, ghar means far more than bricks and mortar. It means the household, the family under one roof, and the feeling of belonging that makes a place home.

The word stretches naturally: "ghar" can mean one's ancestral village home, the family as a unit ("sara ghar" — the whole household), or simply the place where your heart rests. "Ghar jana" (to go home) is one of the happiest phrases in the language.

Origin and etymology

Ghar comes from the Sanskrit griha, meaning house or home, through the Prakrit ghara. It is among the oldest words in the language — the word for home is as old as the idea of home itself.

The same ancient root is shared across the languages of North India, a reminder that the concept of ghar predates all of them.

Cultural context

The ghar is the centre of Punjabi life. Joint families, shared meals, the courtyard where elders sit and children play — the ghar holds generations together. Hospitality begins at the ghar's door: a guest is welcomed as family.

Punjabi songs are full of the ghar — the bride leaving her parents' ghar, the migrant dreaming of returning to his ghar, the mother keeping the ghar's lamp lit. To build a ghar, to keep a ghar, is a life's work and a life's pride.

ਘਰ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਮਕਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ — ਉਹ ਥਾਂ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਦਿਲ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ। ਘਰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਟਾਂ-ਪੱਥਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਅਤੇ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਹੈ।
