ਪਿੰਡ

pind
Say itPINDTypeNoun
In short

Pind is the Punjabi word for village — the close-knit rural community at the heart of Punjabi identity.

Meaning

Pind means village: the rural settlement where most Punjabis lived for centuries and where millions still live. A pind is a cluster of homes surrounded by fields, with its gurdwara or temple, its school, its pond and its common gathering places.

But pind means more than a place on a map. It means one's roots — the community that raised you, the people who know your family for generations. To ask "tera pind kehda?" (which is your village?) is to ask who you are.

Origin and etymology

Pind is an old word of the region's spoken language, used for the village settlement since ancient times. It belongs to the basic vocabulary of Punjabi — the kind of word that needs no dictionary because every child grows up inside its meaning.

Its forms and relatives appear across the neighbouring languages of the northwest, marking it as a word of the soil itself.

Cultural context

The pind is the emotional centre of Punjabi culture. Folk songs sing of leaving the pind and longing to return; migrants in Canada, England and America name their associations and even their streets after their pinds; and weddings, festivals and harvests are village affairs.

Village life runs on relationships: the sarpanch and panchayat, the shared well, the gurdwara committee, the neighbours who are family in all but name. The pind's honour is everyone's honour, and its joys are everyone's joys.
