Meaning

Khet means a field: a piece of cultivated land where crops are grown. In Punjab, the khet is where wheat, rice, sugarcane, cotton and vegetables grow in their seasons, and the word instantly calls up the green and gold landscape of the countryside.

For farming families the khet is more than a workplace — it is the family's foundation, its inheritance and its pride. "Khet" in conversation can mean the land, the crop standing on it, or the whole way of life built around it.

Origin and etymology

Khet comes from the Sanskrit kshetra, meaning a field or a tract of land. The word is ancient, and its journey into Punjabi shows how central farming has always been to the region — the word for the field is as old as the civilisation that tills it.

Kshetra also gives Punjabi related senses of area or domain, as in "khetr" in older literary use.

Cultural context

The khet is the stage of Punjabi rural life. Sowing and harvest set the calendar; Vaisakhi celebrates the wheat harvest; and folk songs are full of the sights and labour of the fields. The farmer's bond with his khet is a favourite theme of poetry — love, worry and pride mixed together.

Land hunger and land love both run deep. Families divide khets among sons with great ceremony, and disputes over field boundaries are the stuff of village legend. To own a khet is to belong; to work one is to be somebody.

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਥ

ਖੇਤ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਵਾਹੀਯੋਗ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ — ਉਹ ਧਰਤੀ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਫ਼ਸਲਾਂ ਉਗਾਈਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਣਕ, ਝੋਨਾ, ਗੰਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਬਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

ਕਿਸਾਨ ਲਈ ਖੇਤ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਹ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਹੈ। ਬਿਜਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਢੀ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਕੈਲੰਡਰ ਤੈਅ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸਾਖੀ ਕਣਕ ਦੀ ਵਾਢੀ ਦਾ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਹੈ।

ਲੋਕ-ਗੀਤ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਜ਼ਾਰਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ — ਖੇਤ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੈ।
