ਮਿਹਨਤ

Meaning

Mehnat means hard work or diligent effort. It is work done honestly and with full energy — in the fields, in a trade, in study, in any calling. The word carries moral weight: mehnat is the opposite of idleness and of getting by on tricks.

In Punjabi sayings, mehnat is the key that opens every door. "Mehnat da phal" — the fruit of hard work — is the reward that no one can take from you, and elders teach children that there is no substitute for it.

Origin and etymology

Mehnat comes from the Arabic mihnat (محنت), meaning labour or toil, which entered Punjabi through Persian. It is thoroughly naturalised — the phrase "mehnat karna" (to work hard) is among the most used verb phrases in the language.

The same root appears in related words across North India and Pakistan, a sign of how widely the value of hard work is shared in the region.

Cultural context

Punjab's identity is tied to mehnat. The Green Revolution made the Punjabi farmer a symbol of hard work feeding the nation; Punjabi migrants built reputations abroad as tireless workers; and the Sikh teaching of kirat karni — earning an honest living — gives mehnat a spiritual dimension.

In everyday life, praising someone's mehnat is among the highest compliments. Parents point to hardworking neighbours as examples, teachers urge students toward mehnat before exams, and success stories are always told as stories of mehnat.

ਮਿਹਨਤ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ, ਲਗਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਮਾਨਦਾਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਕੰਮ। ਖੇਤ ਵਿੱਚ, ਦੁਕਾਨ 'ਤੇ, ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਵਿੱਚ — ਹਰ ਕੰਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਨਦੇਹੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੁਟਣ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
