In short

Fasal is the crop — the season's harvest, and the whole year's fortune riding on weather, water and price. Punjab's village year turns on two fasals: wheat in spring, paddy in autumn.

Meaning

ਫ਼ਸਲ (fasal) is the crop — what the field yields in a season — and by extension the harvest itself. A farmer speaks of “this year’s fasal” the way a businessman speaks of his turnover: it is the whole year’s work made visible, and the whole family’s fortune riding on weather, water and price.

Punjab’s year turns on two fasals: the rabi (winter) crop, chiefly wheat, harvested around Vaisakhi in April; and the kharif (summer) crop, chiefly paddy, harvested in autumn. Everything in village life — weddings, loans, festivals — is timed to the fasal.

Origin and etymology

The word comes from Arabic ਫ਼ਸਲ (faṣl), meaning a division or season — the part of the year given to a crop. It travelled into Punjabi through Persian, the administrative language of earlier centuries, and is used across North India for the harvest.

Cultural context

The fasal is where farming meets fate. A good monsoon, timely canal water, a fair price at the mandi — these decide whether the year is remembered with relief or dread. The wheat fasal of April fills the grain markets with tractor-trolleys piled high; the paddy fasal of October fills the air with the smoke of stubble fires. Government procurement, minimum support prices and the mandi system all revolve around the fasal, and in recent years farmers’ protests have too — because the fasal is never just a crop; it is the farmer’s entire economics.
