In short

Kanak is wheat — the grain on which Punjab stands. Sown in winter, harvested at Vaisakhi, it made Punjab India's breadbasket.

Meaning

ਕਣਕ (kanak) is wheat — the grain on which Punjab stands. The winter (rabi) crop, sown after Diwali and harvested around Vaisakhi in April, wheat made Punjab India’s breadbasket and the Punjabi farmer the country’s proverbial provider. When a Punjabi says “fasal,” half the time he means kanak.

Origin and etymology

The word’s deeper origin is not firmly established in the sources; it is the ancient, everyday Punjabi name for wheat.

Cultural context

The wheat year sets Punjab’s calendar. Sowing in November, green fields through winter, golden harvest in April — and then Vaisakhi, the festival that is really a thanksgiving for the kanak. In April and May the mandis overflow: tractor-trolleys piled high with grain, commission agents, government procurement, the whole machinery of the minimum support price.

Wheat is also the centre of the Punjabi table — the roti — and of the farmer’s pride: a standing golden field of kanak is the image of a year gone right.
