Meaning

Roti is the round, unleavened flatbread cooked on a hot tawa that sits at the centre of the Punjabi meal. Made from whole-wheat flour (atta), water and a little salt, it is rolled thin, puffed over flame, and often finished with ghee. No Punjabi thali is complete without it.

Beyond the food itself, roti has come to mean livelihood — one's daily bread in the fullest sense. "Roti kamana" (to earn one's roti) means to earn a living, and sharing roti is sharing life itself.

Origin and etymology

Roti is an old word of the region, related to the Sanskrit rotika, a kind of bread. It has been the staple word for bread across North India for many centuries, and in Punjabi it gathered meanings far beyond the tawa.

The extension from bread to livelihood is ancient and natural: in a farming society, bread on the table is the visible proof that work has been done and the family is provided for.

Cultural context

Roti is sacred in Punjabi life in a way that goes beyond nutrition. The Sikh langar serves roti to all who come, rich or poor, as an act of equality. Offering roti to a guest is the first duty of hospitality; refusing it can offend.

Making rotis is also a measure of skill and care — a young bride's round, puffed rotis are quietly admired, and mothers teach daughters the rhythm of rolling and flipping as a rite of passage. "Roti" in songs and sayings stands for home, honesty and survival.

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਥ

ਰੋਟੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਖਾਣੇ ਦਾ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਹੈ। ਕਣਕ ਦੇ ਆਟੇ ਦੀ ਗੋਲ, ਪਤਲੀ ਰੋਟੀ ਤਵੇ 'ਤੇ ਸੇਕ ਕੇ ਘਿਓ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਪਰੋਸੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਦਾਲ-ਸਬਜ਼ੀ, ਲੱਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੱਖਣ ਨਾਲ ਰੋਟੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਥਾਲੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਨ ਹੈ।

ਰੋਟੀ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਖਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਰੋਜ਼ੀ-ਰੋਟੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਹੈ। "ਰੋਟੀ ਕਮਾਉਣਾ" ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਇਮਾਨਦਾਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਾ ਕਰਨਾ। ਲੰਗਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਟੀ ਛਕਾਉਣਾ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਹੈ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਘਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੋਟੀ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਇੱਕ ਕਲਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੋਲ ਅਤੇ ਫੁੱਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਰੋਟੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੀ ਤਾਰੀਫ਼ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਮਾਵਾਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਟੀ ਵੇਲਣੀ ਸਿਖਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
