langar
Say itlung-GURTypeNoun
In short

Langar is the free community meal served at every gurdwara — simple vegetarian food eaten by all, seated together as equals.

Meaning

Langar is the community kitchen of the gurdwara, and the free meal it serves. The food is simple and vegetarian — dal, sabzi, roti, rice, sometimes kheer — cooked and served by volunteers called sevadars. Everyone is welcome: Sikh or not, rich or poor, all sit together on the floor in rows (pangat) and eat the same food.

The point of langar is equality made visible. There are no separate tables, no special servings, no questions asked. A labourer and a millionaire eat from the same pots, served by the same volunteers. Karah prashad, the blessed sweet pudding, is distributed separately in the divan hall.

Origin and history

The spirit of langar is traced to Guru Nanak's famous 'sacha sauda', the true bargain: given money by his father to start a business, the young Nanak instead spent it feeding a group of hungry holy men, declaring this the truly profitable trade. The janamsakhi tradition presents this as the seed of langar.

Guru Angad established a regular langar at Khadur, and Guru Amar Das at Goindval made it a rule that everyone — high or low — must sit in the pangat and eat before being granted an audience with him. Tradition holds that even Emperor Akbar, when he visited Goindval, sat on the floor and ate in the pangat like everyone else.

Today the langar at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar feeds tens of thousands of people every single day, making it one of the largest free kitchens in the world — run entirely by volunteers and donations.

Cultural context

Serving in the langar — chopping vegetables, rolling rotis, washing the vast steel plates — is one of the most common forms of seva (selfless service) for Sikhs, and visitors are actively encouraged to pick up a task. Many Sikhs sponsor a langar on family occasions: birthdays, anniversaries, or in memory of the departed.

During disasters, Sikh communities famously set up langars for relief — the same pots that feed the sangat feed flood and earthquake victims. For many non-Sikhs, their first experience of Sikhism is a meal in a langar hall, which is exactly as the Gurus intended.
