Pangat is the row of people seated together to eat langar — the visible symbol of Sikh equality, where all sit and eat as one.
Meaning
Pangat literally means a row or line. In Sikh life it means the rows of people who sit side by side on the floor to eat langar together. The sangat is the congregation in worship; the pangat is the congregation at the meal.
The pangat is where Sikh equality stops being an idea and becomes something you can see: a farmer beside a professor, a child beside a grandmother, a Sikh beside a visiting tourist — all in one unbroken row, eating the same food, served by the same volunteers. Nobody's row is better than anyone else's.
Origin and history
The pangat was institutionalised by Guru Amar Das at Goindval in the sixteenth century. He made it a rule that no one — however high their rank — could meet him without first sitting in the pangat and eating langar with everyone else. The tradition holds that when Emperor Akbar visited Goindval, he too sat on the floor in the row and ate the simple meal before his audience with the Guru.
This was a radical act in a society rigidly divided by caste. The pangat said, in the plainest possible language, that before God and before the Guru's kitchen, all distinctions fall away.
Cultural context
Sikhs still speak of 'pangat' with pride — to sit in the pangat is to take your place in the community. At large gurdwaras, volunteers lay out long rows of mats and manage the flow of thousands through successive pangats, especially on Sundays and gurpurbs.
The word is also used more broadly for any row of seated people, and metaphorically for joining the ranks of a cause — but its heart remains the langar hall, where the row stretches on and everyone belongs in it.
