barsaat
Say itbar-SAATTypeNoun
In short

Barsaat is the Punjabi word for the rainy season — the monsoon months of relief, romance and new growth.

Meaning

Barsaat means the rainy season: the monsoon months, roughly July to September, when the rains come after summer's heat. The word can mean the season itself or the rain that defines it — "barsaat aa gayi" (the rains have come).

In an agricultural land, barsaat is destiny. Good rains mean good crops; the whole countryside watches the sky, and the first shower is greeted like a festival.

Origin and etymology

Barsaat comes from the Sanskrit varsha, meaning rain, through the natural sound-changes of the region's speech. It is an ancient word for an ancient dependence — the rains that make or break the harvest.

The same root appears across North India wherever the monsoon is awaited.

Cultural context

The monsoon is the most romantic season in Punjabi art. Folk songs sing of the barsaat — of lovers meeting in the rain, of peacocks dancing, of the earth's perfume rising. The teej festival, when swings hang from trees and women sing together, belongs to these months.

For the farmer, barsaat is work and prayer together: rice is transplanted in the wet fields, and every shower is counted. Children splash in the lanes, pakoras fry in every kitchen, and the parched land turns green overnight.
