Parivar is the Punjabi word for family — the extended bonds of kinship that anchor Punjabi life.
Meaning
Parivar means family. In Punjabi the word naturally includes the extended family — parents, children, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins — because that is how family has traditionally been lived: together, or at least tightly bound.
The parivar is the unit of identity, support and celebration. Decisions are family decisions; joys and sorrows are shared; and a person's standing is inseparable from their parivar's honour.
Origin and etymology
Parivar comes from the Sanskrit parivara, meaning a household, retinue or family circle. It is a classical word that Punjabi kept for one of life's most important things.
The older colloquial word tabbar is also used in Punjabi for the immediate family, but parivar is the standard, respectful term.
Cultural context
Punjabi culture is family culture. The joint family — several generations under one roof or in one compound — was the norm for centuries, and even nuclear families abroad keep the parivar close through daily calls, shared festivals and constant visiting.
Family occasions structure the year: weddings that gather hundreds, births, lohris, and the gatherings at Vaisakhi and Diwali. Respect for elders (buzurgan da satkar) is the parivar's first rule, and the parivar's izzat (honour) is everyone's trust to keep.
