In short

ਚਾਚਾ (chacha) is your father's younger brother. Often closer in age to the children, he is the playful, approachable uncle of the Punjabi family.

Meaning

ਚਾਚਾ (chacha) is the Punjabi word for your father's younger brother — the younger brother of your father. Paired with ਤਾਇਆ (taya, father's elder brother), it completes Punjabi's precise map of paternal uncles: the language never lumps them together the way English does with "uncle". Whether a man is your taya or your chacha depends entirely on whether he is older or younger than your father.

Because the chacha is usually the younger brother, he is often closer in age to his nieces and nephews than the taya is. His wife is your ਚਾਚੀ (chachi), and in many families the chacha-chachi household is the one children visit most eagerly — there are often cousins near their own age, and a slightly more relaxed atmosphere.

Like taya, the word works as both title and address: "ਮੇਰਾ ਚਾਚਾ" (my chacha) when speaking about him, "ਚਾਚਾ ਜੀ" (chacha ji) when speaking to him.

Cultural context

If the taya is the family's second authority, the chacha is often its favourite playmate. Punjabi folklore and film are full of the fun-loving chacha who sneaks children sweets, covers for their mischief, and teaches them the things their parents will not. The relationship carries affection without the full weight of seniority, and many Punjabis remember their chacha as the adult who felt most like a friend.

That informality has limits, of course. He is still addressed as ਚਾਚਾ ਜੀ, and in traditional homes his advice still counts in family matters — just delivered with a smile. At weddings, the chacha is often the one organising the music, the dancing, and the general celebration while the elders handle the ceremony.

In the diaspora, where extended families may live streets — or continents — apart, the chacha's role as the bridge between generations persists. He is the uncle who explains the old customs to the young ones in terms they understand, keeping the family story alive across the distance.
