In short

Bolna is the Punjabi verb "to speak" — the act of talking, from daily chatter to words that matter.

Meaning

Bolna means to speak or to talk. It is the general verb for producing speech: "bolna" covers chatting with friends, addressing a gathering, and everything in between. "Ki bolde ho?" (what are you saying?) is constant in conversation.

The verb also means to utter or to say in a weightier sense. "Sach bolna" (to speak the truth) is a moral command; "bol" as a noun means a word or saying, and a person's "bol" — their speech — reveals their character.

Origin and etymology

Bolna belongs to the old spoken vocabulary of the region for uttering sound and speech. It is the plain, ancient verb for talking, shared in similar forms with the neighbouring languages.

The noun "bol" (word, saying) comes from the same root, as in "boliyan" — the rhyming couplets sung in Punjabi folk tradition.

Cultural context

Speech is power in Punjabi culture. The well-spoken person is admired; the elder's "bol" settles disputes; and the poet's boliyan carry wit and wisdom. "Meethe bol" (sweet words) open doors that force cannot.

At the same time, Punjabi wisdom warns about bolna: "bol" can wound, and the wise speak little and well. The Sikh tradition honours truthful speech — "sach" — as a spiritual discipline, and Gurbani is itself the Guru's bol, the Guru's word.
