ਬੁੱਢਾ

Meaning

Buddha means old or elderly. Used of people, it describes an old man (the feminine is buddhi, an old woman); used of things, it means aged or worn with time — a buddha tree, a buddha house.

The word is descriptive rather than insulting when used plainly, but Punjabi offers more respectful alternatives for elders: buzurg (elder) and baba/bebe carry honour. Context and tone decide everything.

Origin and etymology

Buddha belongs to the old spoken vocabulary of the region. It is the everyday Punjabi word for aged, distinct from the more formal buzurg (from Persian) used in respectful address.

Note that this everyday adjective is a different word from Buddha, the title of the founder of Buddhism — same sound in roman letters, different word and meaning in Punjabi.

Cultural context

Elders hold a place of honour in Punjabi culture. The buzurg — grandparents and old people of the village — are consulted, obeyed and served; touching their feet and seeking their blessings is the daily practice of respect.

Old age is seen as the season of wisdom. Sayings credit the buddhe with experience no book can teach, and grandchildren gather for their stories. To grow old surrounded by family is considered a blessed life.
