ਚੰਨ

chann
Say itCHUNNTypeNoun
In short

Chann is the Punjabi word for the moon — the night's lamp, beloved in songs and stories.

Meaning

Chann means the moon: the bright disc that lights the night sky. The full moon is "puranmashi da chann", and a moonlit night is "chandni raat" — one of the most beautiful phrases in the language.

The moon in Punjabi is gentle and romantic, never cold. It is the confidant of lovers, the beauty's comparison ("chann jeha mukhda" — a face like the moon), and the marker of festivals and fasts.

Origin and etymology

Chann comes from the Sanskrit chandra, meaning moon, worn smooth by millennia of daily speech. It is among the oldest words in the language — people have said a version of it while looking up at the night sky for thousands of years.

The same ancient root names the moon across the languages of North India.

Cultural context

The moon rules Punjabi time and romance. Karva Chauth's fast ends when the moon rises; Eid is declared on the moon's sighting; and Guru Nanak's birth is celebrated on the full moon of Kartik.

Punjabi songs are drunk on the chann. Lovers meet by moonlight in folk tales, mothers sing of the moon to crying babies ("chann chann" lullabies), and poets have compared beloveds to the moon for centuries.
