Darakht is the Punjabi word for a tree — shade, fruit, timber and the village's gathering place.
Meaning
Darakht means a tree: the woody plant with trunk, branches and leaves that dots the Punjabi landscape. The pipal, the bohar (banyan), the neem, the mango and the shisham are the great darakhts of Punjab.
A tree in Punjabi life is never just wood. It is shade for travellers, a meeting place for the village, fruit for children, and a living elder that outlasts generations.
Origin and etymology
Darakht comes from the Persian darakht (درخت), meaning tree. It arrived centuries ago and is now the standard Punjabi word, used from poetry to forestry.
The native "rukh" is also used in Punjabi, especially in folk songs, but darakht is the everyday term.
Cultural context
The village tree is an institution. The bohar at the village edge shades the gathering of elders; the pipal is sacred and never cut; mango orchards are summer kingdoms for children.
Sikh tradition honours trees — Guru Har Rai is remembered for his care of plants, and gurdwaras keep historic trees (like the Ber trees at the Golden Temple) as living relics. To plant a darakht is considered a lasting good deed, giving shade to strangers for generations.
