gurmat
Say itgur-MUTTypeNoun
In short

Gurmat is the Guru's wisdom — the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and the way of life drawn from them.

Meaning

Gurmat joins gur (the Guru) with mat (counsel, wisdom, doctrine). It means the teaching of the Gurus as enshrined in Gurbani — and, by extension, the Sikh way of life: honest work, sharing with others, remembrance of God, equality and service.

The word is also used as an adjective meaning 'according to the Guru's teaching' — Gurmat Sangeet is the traditional Sikh music of the Gurus' court, a Gurmat camp is a Sikh youth camp, and to do something 'Gurmat anusaar' is to do it the Guru's way.

Gurmat should not be confused with Gurmata (with an extra 'a') — a formal resolution passed by the Sarbat Khalsa, the assembly of the whole Sikh community gathered at the Akal Takht. A Gurmata is regarded as the Guru's own decision, binding on the Panth. The two words are cousins: both claim the Guru's authority, one in teaching and one in collective decision.

Origin and history

The word gurmat appears throughout Gurbani — the Gurus constantly contrast gurmat, the Guru's wisdom, with manmat, the mind's own self-willed thinking. 'Gurmat' is the path out of ego and into truth.

The Gurmata tradition belongs to the eighteenth century, when the Khalsa, organised in misls (confederacies), gathered at Amritsar on Vaisakhi and Diwali as the Sarbat Khalsa and passed resolutions — Gurmattas — on war, peace and panthic affairs before the Akal Takht. The most famous Gurmattas directed the Khalsa's resistance during the darkest years of persecution.

Cultural context

To say someone is 'Gurmat-oriented' or 'Gurmat wala' is high praise in Sikh circles — it means their life visibly follows the Guru's teaching. Parents send children to Gurmat camps to ground them in Sikh history, kirtan and values.

Debates about what is and isn't 'Gurmat' are lively and ongoing — the word carries real authority, so Sikhs argue over it with the seriousness it deserves.
