ਹਿੰਮਤ

Meaning

Himmat means courage, resolve or strength of heart. It is the quality that lets a person face danger, hardship or uncertainty without giving up. In Punjabi the word is used as both praise and encouragement: to say someone has himmat is to honour them; to tell someone "himmat rakh" (keep your courage) is to lift them up.

The word suggests moral courage as much as physical bravery — the steadiness to do what is right, to endure, and to begin again after failure.

Origin and etymology

Himmat comes from the Arabic himmat (ہمت), meaning resolve or ambition, which reached Punjabi through Persian. It is one of a large family of Arabic-Persian words that Punjabi absorbed over the centuries and made entirely its own.

The phrase "himmat na haarna" — to not lose courage — is among the most repeated encouragements in the language.

Cultural context

Courage is a celebrated virtue in Punjabi history and story — from the bravery of the Sikh Gurus and their followers to the folk heroes who stood up to tyrants. Himmat is the everyday word that connects ordinary life to that tradition: the farmer facing a bad season, the migrant starting over in a new country, the student sitting an exam.

Elders use the word to steel the young. "Himmat kar" — take courage, make the effort — is advice given before every hard task, and it carries the community's confidence that the person can meet it.

ਹਿੰਮਤ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਹੌਸਲਾ, ਦਲੇਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹਤਾ। ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਟੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਅਤੇ ਹਾਰ ਨਾ ਮੰਨਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਨੂੰ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। "ਹਿੰਮਤ ਰੱਖ" ਇਹ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਆਮ ਵਾਕ ਹੈ।

ਪਰਦੇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਵੀਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ, ਮਾੜੀ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਿਸਾਨ, ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ — ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਵੱਡੇ ਛੋਟਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ — ਹਿੰਮਤ ਕਰ, ਰੱਬ ਮਦਦ ਕਰੇਗਾ।
