Ik Oankar — 'There is One Creator' — is the opening of the Sikh scripture and the foundation of the Sikh faith.
Meaning
Ik Oankar is the first phrase of the Mool Mantar, the root formula with which the Guru Granth Sahib opens. Ik means one; Oankar is the primal sound, the creative Being from whom the universe unfolds. Together: There is One Universal Creator — one, not many; creator of all that is, beyond all division.
In Gurmukhi it is written as the single character ੴ — the numeral 'one' fused with the open syllable of Oankar — so that the oneness is visible on the page before a single word is read. The full opening runs:
ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
One Universal Creator, whose Name is Truth; the creative Being, without fear, without enmity, timeless in form, unborn, self-existent — known by the Guru's grace. (Mool Mantar)
Origin and history
The Mool Mantar is Guru Nanak's own summary of his revelation — tradition holds that it was the first utterance after his enlightenment experience at Sultanpur, when he emerged from the river with the declaration 'there is no Hindu, there is no Muslim.' Ik Oankar was his answer to a world of many gods, many castes and many sects: behind all of it, One.
The phrase stands at the head of the Guru Granth Sahib and at the beginning of countless compositions within it. No Sikh prayer, reading or undertaking begins without it.
Cultural context
ੴ is the most recognisable Sikh symbol in the world — worn as jewellery, mounted on walls and cars, tattooed, printed on wedding cards. For many Sikhs it functions the way a cross or crescent does elsewhere: an instant declaration of faith.
It has also become an interfaith emblem of monotheism, quoted by Sikhs in dialogue with other religions: whatever our differences, we begin from the One.
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਥ
ੴ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ — ਇੱਕ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ, ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪੀ ਕਰਤਾ। ਇਹ ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤਰ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਆਰੰਭ ਵੀ ਇਸੇ ਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕੋ ਅੱਖਰ ੴ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ — '੧' ਅਤੇ 'ਓਅੰਕਾਰ' ਦਾ ਸੁਮੇਲ। ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਦੇਵੀ-ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਵੰਡੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕੋ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ — ਕਰਤਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ।
ਅੱਜ ੴ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਹੈ — ਗਹਿਣਿਆਂ, ਘਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਦਿਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
