ਸਤਿਨਾਮ

satnam
Say itsut-NAAMTypeNoun
In short

Satnam — 'True is the Name' — declares that God's Name is the one eternal truth, and is chanted by Sikhs in meditation.

Meaning

Satnam joins sat (truth, that which truly is) with naam (the Name). It is the second phrase of the Mool Mantar, immediately after Ik Oankar: the One Creator's Name is Truth — not a label but the eternal reality behind all appearances. Everything else changes; the Name does not.

Satnam is also a mantra in its own right. Sikhs chant 'Satnam Vaheguru' — the True Name, the Wondrous Lord — in Naam simran, sometimes for hours, letting the two words carry the mind past its chatter into stillness. Guru Nanak's teaching is that the Name is not merely spoken about God; repeated with love, it unites the speaker with God.

Origin and history

Satnam comes from the Mool Mantar, Guru Nanak's foundational revelation, and echoes through the whole of Gurbani — 'satnaam' appears hundreds of times across the scripture, in the hymns of the Gurus and the Bhagats alike.

The pairing 'Satnam Vaheguru' as a chant belongs especially to the devotional life of the community: it is sung in divans, repeated on the mala (prayer beads), and taught to children as the simplest possible prayer — two words that contain everything.

Cultural context

Sikhs name children Satnam, Satnam Singh and Satnam Kaur, planting the word in the family's daily speech. In moments of fear or resolve, 'Satnam' is breathed like an anchor — the reminder that beneath whatever is happening, Truth stands.

It is worth distinguishing Satnam from 'Sat Sri Akal', the better-known Sikh greeting — both honour truth, but Satnam is the Name itself, the object of meditation.
