ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ

In short

Vaheguru — 'Wondrous Enlightener' — is the Sikh name of God, whispered as the Gurmantra and chanted in meditation.

Meaning

Vaheguru joins vah — an exclamation of wonder, like 'wow!' — with guru, the enlightener who dispels darkness. The name means the Wondrous Lord: God as the wonder that stops the mind and fills it with awe. It is the most-used name of God in Sikh life, the word on every Sikh's lips in prayer, greeting and meditation.

Vaheguru is the Gurmantra — the mantra whispered into the ear of each candidate during the amrit ceremony — and the core of Naam simran, the meditative remembrance of God. Sikhs repeat it silently with the breath, chant it in congregations ('Satnam Vaheguru'), and cry it in the jaikara: 'Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal.'

The name appears in Gurbani itself, in the compositions of the Bhatts:

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਹਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

Vaheguru, Vaheguru, Vaheguru — wondrous is the Divine Being. (Bhatt Gayand)

Origin and history

The Gurus used many names for God — Ram, Rahim, Allah, Kartar, Akal Purakh — teaching that all names point to the one Formless One. But Vaheguru became the distinctively Sikh name, the one that belongs to no other tradition, and over the centuries it became the Gurmantra of the Khalsa.

Its rise mirrors the rise of the Sikh community's distinct identity: a people who could praise God in the shared vocabulary of India, but who greeted, prayed and meditated in their own word of wonder.

Cultural context

'Vaheguru' punctuates Sikh speech the way 'God willing' punctuates others' — in gratitude, in shock, in hope. A Sikh hearing good news breathes 'Vaheguru'; facing trouble, the same word becomes a prayer.

The greeting 'Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh' carries the name twice, and Sikh children learn it among their first words. To chant Vaheguru in sangat — hundreds of voices as one — is for many Sikhs the deepest spiritual experience of their lives.
