ਸਿਮਰਨ

simran
Say itsim-RUNTypeNoun
In short

Simran is the loving remembrance of the Divine Name — meditation through quiet or chanted repetition that sits at the heart of Sikh spiritual practice.

Meaning

What does simran mean in Punjabi? Simran (ਸਿਮਰਨ) is the loving remembrance of God — the practice of holding the Divine Name in the mind and repeating it, quietly or aloud, as a form of meditation. It is one of the central disciplines of Sikh spiritual life, alongside honest work and sharing with others.

In everyday speech the word carries the same core sense. To do simran of someone is to keep them in your thoughts with love and attention — but in its religious use it almost always means remembrance of the Divine Name, known as Naam.

Origin and history

Simran comes from the Sanskrit smaraṇa (ਸ੍ਮਰਣ), meaning remembrance or keeping in memory. The idea runs through the bhakti traditions of South Asia, where devotion meant fixing the heart on the divine. Guru Nanak took this older practice and made it the engine of the Sikh path: liberation comes not from rituals or pilgrimages but from remembering the One who is always present.

The Guru Granth Sahib returns to simran again and again. One of its best-known lines, by Guru Ram Das, says: "ਸਿਮਰਉ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ" — "I meditate, I remember, I remember, and I find peace." The repetition in the line itself mirrors the practice it describes.

How simran is practised

Simran can be spoken or silent. Many Sikhs begin by chanting the Gurmantra "Waheguru" aloud — often during a kirtan divan or in sangat — and then let it settle into a quiet, inward repetition that continues while they work or walk. A mala, the 108-bead rosary, is sometimes used to count the repetitions.

The preferred time is amrit vela, the early hours before dawn, when the mind is still and the world is quiet. Simran also weaves through the daily round of nitnem: the banis are recited with devotion, and simran is the meditation that fills the space between them.

Cultural context

In the Punjab, simran is a word everyone knows. Elders say they are "doing simran" the way they would say they are going for a walk — it is an ordinary part of the day. When a Sikh passes away, sangat often gathers to do simran together, filling the room with a low, shared chant of Waheguru.

Although it is central to Sikhism, simran is not exclusive to it. The wider bhakti and sant traditions of India use the same word for the same practice, which is why simran appears in the poetry of saints across many traditions.
