Jawan means young in Punjabi — the vigour and promise of youth, and by extension the young soldier.
Meaning
Jawan means young or youthful. It describes a person in the prime of youth — a jawan munda (young man) or jawan kuddi (young woman) — and carries a sense of vigour, strength and promise.
The word also means a soldier. In "fauji jawan", the youth of the word meets the discipline of the army, and the jawan becomes the brave young man in uniform.
Origin and etymology
Jawan comes from the Persian javan (جوان), meaning young. It is one of the many Persian words that Punjabi absorbed so completely that no speaker thinks of it as borrowed.
The same root gives jawani, meaning youth — the season of life the word describes.
Cultural context
Youth is celebrated in Punjabi culture as the season of strength and daring. Folk heroes are jawan; bhangra is danced with jawan energy; and parents' hopes rest on their jawan children.
At the same time, Punjabi wisdom pairs youth with the duty to use it well — the jawani spent in mehnat (hard work) and seva (service) is the jawani that earns respect in old age. The soldier-jawan, defending the country, is the most honoured figure of all.
