ਜੀ ਕਰਨਾ

In short

The heart doing — the everyday Punjabi way of saying you feel like doing something, from craving sweets to wanting a walk.

Literal meaning

Jee is the heart or inner self, karna is to do. The literal sense is that the heart itself 'does' the wanting — desire is not a thought but an act of the inner self.

It is a gentle construction. You do not say 'I want'; you say 'my heart does (it)' — as if the feeling arrives on its own and you merely report it.

What it really means

The phrase expresses inclination, mood, and craving. 'Mera jee karda hai ghumman nu' means I feel like going for a walk. It covers food cravings, travel urges, sudden whims, and deep longings alike.

Its softness is its charm. It asks without demanding and admits desire without insisting — the perfect phrase for wishes you would like fulfilled but can live without.

Cultural context

Jee karna is the engine of Punjabi hospitality: guests are asked what their heart desires, and hosts rush to fulfil it. 'Jee ki karda hai?' is among the warmest questions in the language.

It is also the language of the heart in songs — what the heart does when the beloved is near or far. Whole verses are built on the heart's doings.
