In short

Jhona is paddy — the rice crop transplanted seedling by seedling through the monsoon and harvested by combine in October. The crop that made, and now tests, modern Punjab farming.

Meaning

ਝੋਨਾ (jhona) is paddy — the rice crop grown standing in water through Punjab’s monsoon summer. Transplanted seedling by seedling in June and July, harvested by combine in October, jhona is the kharif crop that pairs with wheat to make Punjab’s famous wheat–rice cycle.

Origin and etymology

The word’s origin is not firmly established in the sources; it is the standard Punjabi name for the paddy crop in the field.

Cultural context

Paddy transformed Punjab after the Green Revolution: high-yielding varieties, cheap power for tubewells, and assured procurement turned the state’s fields toward rice on a massive scale. But jhona carries the state’s hardest debates too — the falling water table beneath the paddy fields, and the October smoke of parali, the stubble burned to clear fields for wheat.

The transplanting season brings migrant labourers from the eastern states to every village; the harvest season brings the combines. Love it or question it, jhona is the crop that made — and now tests — modern Punjab farming.
