In short

The kachhera is the knee-length undergarment of the Khalsa — one of the Five Ks, symbolising modesty and self-restraint.

Meaning

The kachhera is a knee-length undergarment, resembling loose shorts with a drawstring (nada) at the waist. It is one of the Five Ks, worn by initiated Khalsa Sikhs at all times.

It symbolises modesty, chastity and self-restraint — mastery over desire and dignity in conduct. Practically, it was also the garment of a soldier: unlike the flowing robes of the time, the kachhera allowed free movement in battle and in work. The spiritual and the practical meet in it, as they do in all the Five Ks.

Origin and history

The kachhera was mandated in 1699 with the other four Ks at the creation of the Khalsa. In an age when the Khalsa was often at war, an undergarment that was modest, secure and suited to riding and fighting was a necessity — and Guru Gobind Singh elevated that necessity into a vow.

The drawstring carries its own lesson in the tradition: the nada is tied with a reminder to restrain the senses, so that even dressing each morning becomes an act of discipline.

Cultural context

Of the Five Ks, the kachhera is the most private — never displayed, rarely discussed outside the community — but its observance is taken as seriously as the others. It is traditionally made of white cotton, sewn simply, and treated with the respect due to an article of faith.

Because it is worn beneath clothing, the kachhera is the Ks' quietest member — a reminder that the Khalsa discipline governs the hidden life as much as the visible one.
