kangha
Say itKUNG-haaTypeNoun
In short

The kangha is the small wooden comb every initiated Sikh keeps in their hair — one of the Five Ks, an emblem of cleanliness and discipline.

Meaning

The kangha is a small wooden comb, one of the Five Ks. An initiated Sikh keeps it in the kesh — the uncut hair — at all times, typically tucked into the joora (the topknot) beneath the dastar.

Its meaning is simple and practical: cleanliness, order and discipline. The Khalsa keeps uncut hair as an article of faith, and the kangha is the pledge to keep that hair clean and tidy — to honour what God gave rather than neglect it. Twice-daily combing of the kesh is part of the traditional Khalsa routine.

Origin and history

The kangha was mandated with the other four Ks in 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh created the Khalsa. Wood was specified — a natural, humble material — and the comb's small size meant it could always be carried, a discipline you could not leave at home.

The pairing of kesh and kangha is deliberate: the vow to keep the hair uncut is balanced by the duty to keep it groomed. Faith without discipline, the pairing says, is incomplete.

Cultural context

Traditional kanghas are hand-carved from wood, often with fine teeth on one side and coarse on the other; many Sikhs own several and treat them as personal items not to be shared. It is one of the quieter Five Ks — rarely noticed by outsiders, but its presence is checked in the same breath as the others.

Parents teach children to keep the kangha in their joora from a young age, so that caring for the kesh becomes second nature long before amrit is taken.
