The Khalsa is the order of initiated Sikhs created by Guru Gobind Singh on Vaisakhi 1699 — the saint-soldiers who keep the Five Ks.
Meaning
Khalsa means 'the pure'. It is the collective body of Sikhs who have taken amrit — the initiation of the double-edged sword — and committed themselves to the Khalsa discipline: the Five Ks, the daily prayers, and the code of conduct. Members take the names Singh (lion) for men and Kaur (princess) for women.
The Khalsa is often described as sant-sipahi, saint-soldier: devoted to prayer and humility like a saint, yet ready like a soldier to defend the weak and stand against tyranny. It is both a spiritual order and a brotherhood — and sisterhood — bound by a common discipline rather than by birth.
Origin and history
The Khalsa was created by Guru Gobind Singh on Vaisakhi day, 1699, at Anandpur Sahib. Before a huge gathering, the Guru drew his sword and called for a Sikh willing to give his head. One by one, five volunteers stepped forward — the Panj Piare, the five beloved ones. The Guru then initiated them with amrit, sweetened water stirred with a khanda (double-edged sword), and gave them the Five Ks to wear.
Then came the moment that defines the Khalsa: the Guru himself knelt before the five and asked them to initiate him in turn. From Gobind Rai he became Guru Gobind Singh — declaring that the Guru and the Khalsa were now one body, neither above the other. That day the Khalsa was born as a sovereign, casteless order.
Cultural context
Vaisakhi — the Khalsa's birthday — is the biggest Sikh festival of the year, celebrated with Nagar Kirtan processions and amrit sanchar ceremonies at gurdwaras worldwide, where new members join the Khalsa.
The Khalsa ideal shapes Sikh identity far beyond the initiated: the turban, the uncut hair, the readiness to serve and protect are admired across the community. Sikh institutions, charities and even the community's disaster-relief work carry the Khalsa name, honouring the 1699 promise to stand for justice.
