ਨੱਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਮ ਕਰਨਾ

In short

To make someone's life miserable by bothering them relentlessly — the Punjabi way of saying someone is being a constant pest.

Literal meaning

Word for word, this muhavra means 'to put breath into someone's nose'. Nakk is the nose, dam is breath, and karna is to do. Picture someone standing so close to your face that you can hardly breathe — that image of being choked and crowded is the whole point.

It is used transitively: you do it to someone else. 'Us ne meri nakk vich dam kar ditta' means he made my life a misery, he would not leave me alone.

What it really means

The saying describes persistent, suffocating harassment — not one big blow but a drip of constant demands, complaints, nagging, or trouble. A neighbour who keeps complaining about the fence, a moneylender who keeps knocking, a child who keeps asking the same question a hundred times: all of them can be said to have put dam in someone's nose.

It carries a note of exasperation. The speaker is not just reporting trouble but venting: I cannot breathe because of this person. It is one of the most commonly heard complaints in Punjabi households and workplaces.

Cultural context

Punjabi has a rich vocabulary of complaint, and this is among the most vivid. Unlike a formal complaint, it is always informal and spoken — used with family, friends, and neighbours. It also appears often in Punjabi folk songs and films, usually sung by someone fed up with a lover or an in-law.

It is worth noting the direction of the phrase: the tormentor acts, the victim suffers. It is almost never used about oneself doing it to others, which keeps it safely in the territory of venting rather than confessing.
