In short

To 'cut someone's nose' — to bring them public shame and dishonour, one of the strongest Punjabi expressions of disgrace.

Literal meaning

Nakk is the nose, katna is to cut. The literal image is brutal: cutting off someone's nose. In the world of the muhavra, the nose is the seat of honour — to lose it is to lose face entirely.

It is used transitively and always as an accusation: 'tun meri nakk katt ditti' — you have cut my nose, you have shamed me before everyone.

What it really means

The saying means to bring disgrace on a person or, more often, on their family. A child caught stealing, a public scandal, a broken promise made in the community's name — all 'cut the nose' of those connected to the wrongdoer.

The shame is collective. In Punjabi culture, honour (izzat) belongs to the family, not just the individual, so cutting one person's nose wounds the whole household. That is why the phrase hits so hard.

Origin

The image comes from an old punishment: in ancient and medieval India, cutting off the nose was a penalty for serious offences, and it marked the offender with visible, permanent shame. The Ramayana's episode of Surpanakha, whose nose is cut off, is the most famous literary instance of this punishment.

Over centuries the literal punishment faded, but the phrase survived as a metaphor — proof of how deeply the link between the nose and honour runs in the culture.

Cultural context

Nakk is everywhere in Punjabi expressions of honour: 'nakk rakhni' (to keep one's nose, i.e. keep one's honour), 'nakk vaddi rakhni' (to hold one's nose high). Losing it is the ultimate social disaster.

The phrase is serious and is not used jokingly. To tell someone they have cut your nose is a grave charge, and in village and family life it can trigger lasting rifts.
