In short

Narma is cotton — the 'white gold' of Punjab's Malwa belt, picked by hand through autumn. Its soft white bolls once paid for weddings, tractors and houses.

Meaning

ਨਰਮਾ (narma) is cotton — the white fibre crop that was once the pride of Punjab’s Malwa belt. Sown in summer and picked by hand through autumn, narma was called “white gold”: the cash crop that paid for weddings, tractors and houses. Its soft white bolls, bursting from the plant like small clouds, are among the loveliest sights of the farming year.

Origin and etymology

The origin of the word is not firmly established in the sources; it is the long-standing Punjabi name for the cotton plant and its fibre.

Cultural context

Cotton picking — ਚੁਗਾਈ — was women’s work, done boll by boll under the autumn sun, and generations of Malwa women carry the memory of it in their songs. In recent decades narma has had hard years: the pink bollworm, whitefly attacks, and the long debate over BT cotton seed have made it a riskier crop, and much of Malwa has shifted toward paddy.

But the word keeps its glow in memory — the white fields of October, the full baskets, the season when the village had money. To say “narma” in Malwa is still to summon a whole vanished economy of the autumn.
