ਪੱਗ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਣਾ

In short

To tie the turban — to assume honour, dignity, and the weight of responsibility, as a new head of family or a person of standing.

Literal meaning

Pagg is the turban, bannhna is to tie. The literal act is winding the long cloth of the turban around the head — something Punjabi men have done for centuries before stepping out into the world.

The turban is not just clothing. It is the crown of the common man, the visible sign that the wearer carries honour and is ready to face the world with dignity.

What it really means

Figuratively, tying the turban means taking on responsibility and honour together. When a father dies, the eldest son's 'pagg bannhna' ceremony marks him as the new head of the family — the honour is his, and so is the burden.

It is also used for assuming any serious charge: a new sarpanch, a new officer, a young man starting his own business can all be said to have tied the turban. The phrase confers dignity on the task.

Cultural context

The dastar (turban) is central to Punjabi and especially Sikh identity — a symbol of sovereignty, courage, and self-respect given its honoured place by the Gurus. To tie it is a daily act of dignity; to have it tied for you at a ceremony is a rite of passage.

The reverse image also exists: a turban knocked off or thrown at someone's feet is a sign of utter humiliation or supplication. The turban's honour is so great that its tying and untying carry the weight of life's biggest moments.
