The Panj Piare, Punjabi for the Five Beloved Ones, are the five Sikhs who offered their heads to Guru Gobind Singh on Baisakhi day in 1699 and became the first members of the Khalsa. Baptized with the double-edged sword, they then baptized the Guru himself. Sikhs remember them every day in the Ardas prayer.
The story of 1699
On Baisakhi day, 30 March 1699, a huge gathering of Sikhs assembled at Anandpur Sahib. Guru Gobind Singh drew his sword and asked the congregation for a head, saying every great deed needs an equally great sacrifice. One man stepped forward, then another, until five had gone with the Guru into a tent. The Guru emerged with all five alive, dressed in saffron, and baptized them in a new ceremony with the double-edged sword, the khande-di-pahul. Then, in a moment Sikhs treasure, he knelt and asked the five to baptize him as well, becoming both Guru and disciple. He declared that wherever five initiated Sikhs gather, the Guru is present among them.
Who were the original Panj Piare?
They were Bhai Daya Singh, Bhai Dharam Singh, Bhai Himmat Singh, Bhai Mohkam Singh and Bhai Sahib Singh. They came from very different backgrounds: a Khatri shopkeeper, a Jat farmer, a Chhimba calico printer, a Jhiwar water-carrier and a Nai barber, from regions as far apart as Lahore and the south. Each received the surname Singh, and the Guru himself took it too, becoming Guru Gobind Singh. Their name is also spelled Panj Pyare in English.
What do the Panj Piare do today?
The original five were only the beginning. Today any group of five initiated, amritdhari Sikhs, known for observing the rehat, can act as the Panj Piare. They administer the Amrit Sanchar ceremony that brings new members into the Khalsa, lead religious processions like the Nagar Kirtan, and lay the foundation stones of new gurdwaras. They are treated as the embodiment of the Guru, and their counsel carries the Guru's authority. The Panj Piare are remembered every day in the Ardas, and a portion of karah parshad is set aside in their memory before it is shared with the congregation.
