panth
Say itpunthTypeNoun
In short

The Panth is the Sikh people as one body — the path and the community walking it, together.

Meaning

Panth means a path or way — and, by the natural extension of the word, the community that walks it. The Sikh Panth, or Khalsa Panth, is the collective body of Sikhs worldwide: not an organisation with membership cards, but a people bound by shared faith, shared history and shared discipline.

The word carries both senses at once. To speak of 'the Panth' is to speak of the Sikh nation in the cultural sense — its honour ('panth di shaan'), its causes ('panthak masle'), its collective decisions. The adjective panthic means 'concerning the Panth as a whole', and a panthic leader is one the community as a whole looks to.

Origin and history

The Gurus spoke of their followers as walking a panth — Nanak's path of truth. After 1699 the Khalsa gave that path a disciplined, visible form, and in the eighteenth century the Sarbat Khalsa — the gathering of the entire Panth at Amritsar — made collective decisions through Gurmattas passed before the Akal Takht.

The Ardas itself prays for the Panth: 'bіrd ki paij, panth ki jeet' — honour to the tradition, triumph to the Panth. The community's wellbeing is part of the daily prayer, which tells you how central the collective is to Sikh thought.

Cultural context

Sikhs feel the Panth as family. A Sikh in trouble in a foreign city looks for the nearest gurdwara — the Panth's local address — and expects help. Disasters anywhere in the world bring the same response: the Panth organises, collects and serves.

That closeness also means the Panth argues with itself passionately — over politics, over religious questions, over the future. Families argue hardest because they care most; the Panth is no different.
