Sardi is the Punjabi word for cold and the winter season — foggy mornings, quilts, and warming foods.
Meaning
Sardi means cold, and by extension the winter season. Punjab's sardi runs roughly from November to February: foggy mornings, chilly nights, and a landscape that slows down and wraps up warm.
The word covers both the weather and the feeling — "sardi lagna" means to feel cold, and "sardi" as a season brings its own foods, clothes and festivals. Winter in Punjab is loved as much as it is endured.
Origin and etymology
Sardi is built on the old regional word for cold, shared with the neighbouring languages of North India. It belongs to the basic weather vocabulary that every child learns with the changing seasons.
The word for the cold season is as old as the seasons themselves in the speech of the Punjab.
Cultural context
Punjabi winter has its own culture. Mornings begin with hot chai and parathas with white butter; evenings gather around the fire or the heater; and weddings — the great winter events — fill December and January.
Lohri, the mid-January bonfire festival, is sardi's celebration: the coldest nights are answered with fire, song and sesame sweets. Quilts (razais), mustard greens (sarson da saag) and the warmth of family define the season.
