In short

The sath is the village's common gathering place — a raised platform, often under a big tree, where farmers gather in the evening to talk, argue and tell stories.

Meaning

ਸੱਥ (sath) is the village’s common gathering place — traditionally a raised platform, often under a big tree, where the men of the village gather in the evening. The sath is the village’s open-air parliament and its newsroom: disputes are talked over, weddings announced, politics argued, stories told.

Origin and etymology

The word’s origin is not firmly established in the sources; it is the old Punjabi name for the communal sitting-place of the village.

Cultural context

Every old village had its sath — a brick or mud platform under the peepal or banyan, worn smooth by generations of sitting. In the evening, after the day’s work, farmers gather there with the hookah; the talk ranges from the price of wheat to the doings of the panchayat to tales from army days.

The sath is where village opinion forms and where a young man learns how his elders see the world. Television and the smartphone have thinned the evening crowd, but the sath remains in memory and in speech as the symbol of village togetherness.
