shabad
Say itshu-BUDTypeNoun
In short

A shabad is a single hymn of Gurbani — and in Sikh theology, the Shabad itself is the Guru.

Meaning

A shabad is one hymn — one complete composition — from Gurbani. When the granthi announces the day's Hukamnama, he announces a shabad; when ragis sing in the divan, they sing shabads. Each has its raga, its author noted in the heading (Mahalla 1 for Guru Nanak, Mahalla 5 for Guru Arjan, and so on), and its place in the scripture.

But shabad means more than 'a hymn'. In Sikh theology the Shabad is the Word itself — the divine utterance through which God is known. Guru Nanak put it in the most compact form possible in his dialogue with the Nath yogis, the Siddh Gosht:

The Word is the Guru, and the consciousness attuned to it is the disciple. This is why Sikhs bow to a book: the Guru Granth Sahib is honoured not as paper and ink but as the dwelling-place of the Shabad.

Origin and history

The theology of the Shabad runs through all of Gurbani. 'Shabad Guru' — the Word as Guru — is how the tradition explains the transition of 1708: when Guru Gobind Singh ended the line of human Gurus, nothing was lost, because the true Guru had always been the Shabad, which lives on in the Granth.

The daily Hukamnama is the most democratic expression of this idea: every morning, a single shabad is drawn for the whole Panth, and every Sikh — scholar or farmer — sits with the same Word.

Cultural context

Sikhs speak of 'shabad vichar' — reflecting on the Word — as the core spiritual practice, deeper than ritual. To memorise shabads, to sing them, to turn a line over in the mind during the day's work: this is how the Shabad is meant to be lived with.

In everyday speech, 'shabad' can also simply mean 'word' — but in a Sikh mouth, it almost always carries the echo of the sacred.
