A hukamnama is the Guru's order — historically a written edict from the Gurus, and today the daily shabad read each morning at the Golden Temple.
Meaning
Hukamnama joins hukm (order, command) with nama (a letter or written document). The word has two living senses. In history, hukamnamas were written orders that the Sikh Gurus sent to distant congregations — instructions on conduct, organisation and faith, many of which survive in Sikh archives.
In daily Sikh life today, the Hukamnama is the shabad — a hymn from the Guru Granth Sahib — that is selected each morning at Sri Harmandir Sahib, the Golden Temple in Amritsar. After the early-morning kirtan and ardas, the Guru Granth Sahib is opened at random, the shabad on that page is read aloud with an explanation, and it is then published online for Sikhs around the world.
Devout Sikhs treat the day's Hukamnama as the Guru's personal guidance for them that day. Gurdwaras everywhere read it out each morning, and families often discuss its meaning over breakfast.
Origin and history
Written hukamnamas were the Gurus' way of governing a growing, scattered community. Guru Gobind Singh in particular issued hukamnamas to sangats across India — directing them to keep the Khalsa discipline, contribute to the Panth's causes and hold together in difficult times. These documents, bearing the Gurus' seals, are among the most treasured relics of Sikh history.
The daily Hukamnama from the Golden Temple continues this idea: the Guru still speaks to the sangat each day, now through a randomly chosen shabad rather than a dictated letter. The Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, also issues hukamnamas — formal edicts on panthic matters that the community is expected to obey.
Cultural context
For Sikhs living far from Amritsar, the daily Hukamnama is a thread of connection to the Golden Temple — checked on a phone app or website each morning like a spiritual weather report. It is not treated as fortune-telling but as counsel: a hymn about patience lands differently on a hard day than on an easy one.
The word is also used more loosely — a stern instruction from an elder may jokingly be called a hukamnama, showing how deeply the idea of the Guru's command sits in Punjabi culture.
