A takht is a throne of Sikh authority — five in all, with the Akal Takht at Amritsar the highest seat of the Panth.
Meaning
Takht means a throne — a seat of authority. In Sikhism there are five Takhts, five thrones, each marking a place of supreme significance in Sikh history and each a centre of spiritual and temporal authority for the Panth.
The five are: the Akal Takht at Amritsar — the Throne of the Timeless One, facing the Harmandir Sahib, the highest seat of all; Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib, where the Khalsa was born in 1699; Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo, where Guru Gobind Singh rested and worked on the scriptural recension; Takht Sri Patna Sahib in Bihar, the Guru's birthplace; and Takht Sri Hazur Sahib at Nanded in Maharashtra, where the Guru passed away in 1708.
Origin and history
The first and greatest Takht was raised by Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru, who built the Akal Takht directly opposite the Harmandir Sahib — the spiritual throne facing the temporal one. There he sat in royal dress, wore two swords symbolising miri and piri (temporal and spiritual power), and held court, settling the community's disputes. It was a declaration: the Sikh Panth would govern itself.
The other four Takhts grew around the life of Guru Gobind Singh — his birth, the Khalsa's creation, his literary work at Damdama Sahib, and his passing at Nanded. Together the five map the Guru's life onto the geography of India.
Cultural context
Edicts issued from a Takht — especially the Akal Takht — carry the Panth's highest authority; to defy a Takht's hukamnama is the gravest panthic offence. Sikhs make pilgrimages to all five Takhts, and the jathedars of the Takhts are among the community's most prominent figures.
In everyday speech, 'takht' keeps its royal echo — to sit on a takht is to hold power — but for Sikhs the word will always first mean the five thrones of the Panth.
