ਸ਼ਹਿਰ

Meaning

Sheher means a city or town: a large settlement with markets, streets, offices, schools and crowds. In Punjabi conversation the sheher stands opposite the pind (village) — the two poles of Punjabi life, each with its own rhythm.

The word covers everything from a small market town to a great metropolis. Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Patiala are Punjab's sheher; for Punjabis abroad, Toronto, Vancouver and London are the sheher they live in now.

Origin and etymology

Sheher comes from the Persian shahr (شہر), meaning city. It entered Punjabi centuries ago and is completely naturalised — the phrase "sheher jana" (to go to the city) is pure everyday Punjabi.

From the same root comes shehri, meaning a city-dweller or something urban, as opposed to pindu, the villager.

Cultural context

The pind-versus-sheher contrast is one of the great themes of Punjabi life and song. Folk songs sing of the simple pind left behind for the sheher's jobs and bright lights; others sing of the sheher's loneliness and the longing for home.

For generations, going to the sheher meant education, work and a new life — first to Punjab's own cities, then to Delhi and Bombay, then across the world. The sheher is ambition and opportunity; the pind is roots and belonging. Every Punjabi family knows both.

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਥ

ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਨਗਰ — ਵੱਡੀ ਵੱਸੋਂ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ, ਸੜਕਾਂ, ਦਫ਼ਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਉਲਟ ਹੈ — ਦੋਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ-ਆਪਣੀ ਰਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਹੈ।

ਪਿੰਡ ਬਨਾਮ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਾ ਹੈ। ਲੋਕ-ਗੀਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਿੰਡ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਜਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਆਮ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਜਾਣਾ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ, ਰੁਜ਼ਗਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਨਵੀਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ — ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ, ਫਿਰ ਦਿੱਲੀ-ਬੰਬਈ, ਫਿਰ ਪਰਦੇਸ। ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਉਮੰਗ ਹੈ, ਪਿੰਡ ਜੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਹਨ।
