The Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) called off its statewide siege of district administrative complexes in Punjab on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, after the state government invited its leaders for talks on October 13.

The union had begun an indefinite sit-in outside nearly 19 DC offices on October 5, sealing off offices in Sangrur, Bathinda, Moga, Mansa, Muktsar and other districts, Hindustan Times reported.

What are the farmers demanding?

The union has a 13-point charter. The Tribune reported that it wants talks on a proposed free trade agreement with the US scrapped, the land pooling policy repealed, compensation for flood-hit farmers and a new agriculture policy.

It is also seeking a solution to the shortage of DAP fertiliser, a legal guarantee for minimum support price, a loan waiver for farmers and farm labourers, and withdrawal of cases registered against leaders during earlier agitations. The protesters also demanded withdrawal of the electricity and seed bills.

In Sangrur, India Today reported, farmers questioned the government's plan to use drones to monitor stubble burning and asked for a workable solution for straw management instead.
